Anson Mount may have made a big splash starring opposite Britney Spears in Crossroads, but he’s busy in space these days. Mount has come a long way from being in that teenager coming-of-age flick. The actor-writer keeps himself pretty busy with having a lot of irons in his own fire.
Fans know Mount is currently playing Captain Christopher Pike in the TV series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. That series’ name comes from the original Star Trek show’s introductory narration. Mount has been in the Pike role since 2019, one that he’s thoroughly enjoying. He has mentioned in previous interviews that his mother got him hooked on the show when he was just 7 years old.
Anson Mount originally appeared as Pike in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Short Treks. For this generation of Star Trek fans, he’s successfully taken over that role. It originally was played by actor Jeffrey Hunter in an unaired pilot for the O.G. series titled The Cage. But parts of it have been seen in a two-part episode from Star Trek titled The Menagerie.
Anson Mount Points Out Differences In Pike
In an interview with InStyle, Anson Mount pointed toward differences between his Pike character and two other Star Trek leaders, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). “My gut is that if Kirk represented — for lack of a better word, balls, or machismo, and if Picard represented brains, I want Pike to represent the heart,” Mount said.
Yet there’s another element to Pike that Mount wants to bring to the forefront. The actor recognizes that his role pushes him to be a leader. It’s this trait that Mount must make manifest for those who follow his lead on the starship.
“Pike very much feels a responsibility to pass on the knowledge,” Anson Mount said. “That his job is not just to be the boss, to educate those who are going to be coming after him. His downfall later in life is going to be because he jumped in to save younger officers from death.”
Television fans recognized Mount from previous work on Conviction and Hell on Wheels. Other small-screen appearances for him include Ally McBeal, Smallville, CSI: Miami, Law and Order, and Red Widow.
If you want to catch Mount in the podcast world, then he’s got one of those too. Anson Mount is on The Well, a show he writes, produces, and hosts with Branan Edgens.
Besides all of this work, Mount found a place for himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Bart. He played that role in the TV series Inhumans and the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
‘Crossroads’ Star Also Has Theater Roles to His Credit
Anson Mount also has some appearances on the stage in his career, too. He had a starring role in the late Terrence McNally’s play Corpus Christi. Other stage plays include Mankind from Robert O’Hara and Three Sisters from Anton Chekov.
He’s married to photographer Darah Trang and they have one child in their marriage, going strong since 2017.
While Anson Mount has all of these different experiences as an actor, it seems like he’s settling into playing Pike. He’s got his line down when calling on the Enterprise crew to fire their weapons. Pike says, “Hit it!” Getting his name attached to such a successful franchise is just another feather in Mount’s acting cap. He appears to enjoy his role, not taking it for granted, either.
From the big screen to television, Anson Mount is providing other actors and actresses a blueprint to follow should they choose to do so. We’ll be looking forward to seeing him, Rebecca Romijn, and the rest of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast in upcoming episodes.
