At the age of six, Megan relocated with her family to Oklahoma City. During this period, she studied ballet for the first time. Over the course of her youth, Megan fell in love with ballet and continued to perform throughout high school. She eventually studied at the School of American Ballet in New York City.

After graduating from secondary school in Oklahoma City, Megan relocated to Evanston, Illinois, where she attended Northwestern University. Although she studied English literature and art history during this period, she steadily became more and more interested in acting. In 1998, Mullally landed a much more substantial role in the NBC sitcom "Will & Grace," playing Grace's sarcastic assistant named Karen. This role won her Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2000 and in 2006. In addition, she was nominated for the award five other times during this period. She also won three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a number of Golden Globe nominations thanks to her performances in "Will & Grace."
